Battle of Midway
Date(s): June 4-7, 1942
This battle was fought untraditionally, considering it was fought over the Pacific Ocean. The battle was fought with Japan and the U.S. . The purpose of Japan of course was to defeat the U.S. and defeat the Midway base and the island itself. Japanese Admiral Yammamoto Isoroku wanted to put the Unites State's Pacific Fleet into ruins. He used a lot of his navy for this attack. Isoroku thought that American Adirmal Chester Nimitz would focus more on protecting the island. American carriers came in and surprised Japan while they were loading the planes with bombs and refueling them. The U.S. managed to sink four of Japan's carriers and the "Yorktown" was sunk by a submarine of Japan.
Advantages/Disadvantages: A-The U.S. surprised Japan, and Commander Joseph Rochefort broke the Japanese code N-25 to gather information before the attack started. Japan was able to sink a few carriers and bomb part of Midway.
D- This battle had a calamitous effect on Japan's navy, and could not do much to damage the Pacific after this battle.
Outcome: America had defeated Japan, and Japan lost.
Casualties: U.S.- KIA(killed in action): 301 for navy and 39 for marines, Wounded, died later: 8 for navy and 1 for marine, Died, POW(prisoner of war): 1 for navy and 0 for marines, Invalided for Service: 15 for navy and 1 for marine
Japan- had a loss of 250 planes and 100 of their naval pilots
Significance: Known as a turning point in World War II. It enabled a start of a U.S. Navy offensive in the Solomon Islands, and helped U.S. and allies to lead a path of victory in the Pacific.
